Shelby Ussery

Bio & Expertise: Shelby is a learning & reading specialist with over 10 years of experience in independent and public schools. She grounds herself and her work as an educator in the belief that all students deserve to thrive in their learning, and that students should have access to excellent instruction and research-based strategies and interventions. Shelby has worked with students of all levels, including students with reading and language disabilities. She received her masters degree from the reading specialist program at Teachers College, Columbia University and holds her New York State certification as a K-12 literacy specialist. Shelby is trained in the Orton Gillingham approach, and greatly enjoys working with students who need extra support with their literacy skills. In her work, she meets each student where they are and offers individualized instruction curated to students’ needs and interests. As a tutor, Shelby works closely with the families and teachers of her students and believes that alignment of support between home and school is critical for student success. Shelby also has extensive experience supporting students with attention and executive functioning needs, as well as students in need of math support in grades K-5.

Fun Fact: Shelby loves riding her bike with her family around Brooklyn & is uncannily good at “name that tune”.
